I feel that books based on true stories are the best. I love books that show triumph of the human spirit, of the goodness of people and about those overcoming unmeasurable odds to survive. The Winter Orphans tells the story of children who the mountain passes in France to escape the Nazis and those who helped them.
This book was equal parts moving, heartbreaking, hopeful, moving and tense. The danger and plight of survival is richly detailed. The book is told through multiple POV’s as we see Swiss Volunteers with the Swiss Red Cross doing all that they can to save the children.
We see them seeking shelter, being aided, being double-crossed and through it all being in danger. While reading books such as this, I often wonder would I have what it takes to be so courageous and brave. To be selfless and put your own life in danger to help others. There is such courage and strength in the real-life people who were put to the test and answered with compassion, bravery, and sacrifice.
A moving book that I highly recommend.
