It’s always the quiet ones……

Aidan Thomas is a pillar of his community. He is a hardworking, always happy to help a neighbor out, quiet father raising his daughter, Cecelia, alone after his wife passed away. He is also a serial killer.

Rachel knows what Aidan is. She has been held captive in his shed for the last five years and recently brought into his home after he and his daughter had to move. She is now his “tenant/family friend” She is fearful and knows what will happen to her should she try to escape. She recognizes that thirteen-year-old Cecelia may be her hope. Emily owns a local restaurant and has her sights set on Aidan. She finds herself drawn to him and tries to make sense of the woman living in his home.

I found this book to be gripping, thought provoking, emotion evoking and tense. I felt for Rachel, Cecelia, and Emily in this book. Through them, readers are given glimpses into their lives with a killer. Cecelia has been controlled by her father her entire life. He controls her world and what she does. She doesn’t know what to make of Rachel. Rachel lives in fear and has learned what she needs to say and do to stay alive. Emily has no idea that the man she has feelings for is a monster. Aidan reminded me of Ted Bundy to a degree – handsome, smart, charming, and smooth yet very, very deadly.

I appreciated how the author showed the effects of captivity and brainwashing has on a victim. How years of fear, torment, and abuse affect an individual. This isn’t always an easy read, but I found it to be a very enjoyable and captivating one.

I listened to the audiobook and thought it was very well done. I enjoyed the narration.

Well written, well thought out, evoking emotion and had me thinking about it for days after turning the last page.
