Another thrilling addition to the riveting Nikki Hunt series! This book mainly focuses on Nikki’s current investigation and very little on Nikki’s private life. Readers do get glimpses of Rory and mentions of Nikki’s daughter, but it is the investigation that is front and center in Bone Lake. Nikki will need to be on her toes as this investigation will touch a little close to home for Nikki as she looks back on her own parents’ deaths.

Special Agent Nikki Hunt has been called to a murder scene in a home on Bone Lake. Two young women are found viciously murdered inside, and a young man is found injured at the bottom a dumbwaiter. This is not the first time this home has seen death. Twenty years earlier, a married couple and their daughter were found slaughtered with only their young son surviving that brutal and bloody night. While investing the current crime scene, Nikki learns that a party was held the night before and Alexia, the young woman who rented the Airbnb is missing. The plot thickens as Nikki is informed that the owner of the home is Matt Kline, the sole survivor of the attack twenty years ago.

Were the current murders a coincidence? Those at the home were watching a documentary about the original murder at the home twenty years ago. Was this the work of a copycat killer? Has the original killer come back to kill again? Why has this house seen so much death?

The clock is ticking as Nikki and her partner try to find Alexia alive while tracking down a killer. Delving deep into the lives of both Alexia and Matt, some revelations are made and as more questions are asked, more secrets are uncovered.

I enjoyed reading about the investigation and how Nikki approached solving this case, how it affected her, how she worked with her team, and how she showed empathy to one character in this book. Nikki is a strong and vulnerable character who will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of things. I love her drive and determination to see justice served. I have loved this series from the very first book and enjoy the character development that has transpired over the course of the books.

I enjoyed doing my own super sleuthing while reading this book. I had a few suspects in mind in the middle of the book but ruled them out closer to the end. This one kept me on my toes, and I enjoyed how the secrets of various characters were revealed.

This book is not long in length but had a lot going on between those pages. The pacing was steady, and I enjoyed the sense of tension as well as not knowing who could be trusted in this book. Another solid installment in the series.

Well written, gripping, tense and hard to put down! I look forward to reading the next book in the series!!!
