Violet Blandin is a quiet child who loves baking. She does her best to blend in and when she does speak, she is soft spoken and is often not heard at all. But she hears that Chef Delaclaire will be visiting her school and judging her classes baking, she finds her voice when she sees a baking ingredient mishap. I loved that there was a positive reaction when she did use find her voice!
The illustrations in this book were delightful and so well done. But the message here is the most important thing. Quiet and introverted children still have things to say. Having a passion, in this book Violet’s passion is baking, is not only important but can help children and adults be more confident. They already have a voice and opinions, but it helps them to be heard and appreciated. This happens instantly in the book but often does not happen overnight, but I loved the message.
Another part of the book I loved was the section for adults. There are discussion questions and activities to do with children. Plus, there is a recipe that Violet uses in the book titled “Violet’s confidant cookies.”
This book is short, but the message is BIG.
