Six friends, a college reunion, a whole lot of secrets, and an unsolved murder set the stage for In My Dreams I Hold a Knife. I thought I would love this character driven book as many have. I listened to the audiobook and wondered if I had read the book would I have had a different experience? Not sure. I didn’t dislike the book, it’s just that I didn’t love it either.
I found this to be too slow, which does not work for me as a reader or listener. The book is also full of unlikeable characters that I had a hard time feeling for. They are all a mess. Which normally, I could overlook but this added with the pace, didn’t work for me. This book does serve as a “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side” type of book. This group of friends seemed to have it all on the outside but had their share of struggles, insecurity, and drama just like everyone else. Since leaving college they didn’t seem to grow much, and I wondered if by going back, they fell back into their old roles/selves. hmmm
One thing I did enjoy was trying to figure out who killed Heather and why? I also enjoyed how the book was told in the past and then years later at the reunion.
Many loved this book. Please read their reviews as well.
