Welp, I miss vintage Stephen King. I missed being creeped out, horrified, and on the edge of my seat. I listened to the audiobook which was an interesting experience. I think the narration was fine but the shouting about female power and the singing began to get to me. Perhaps, I would have enjoyed this book more if I read it rather than going with the audiobook. There is a lot going on in this book and it does all come together but as much as I enjoy Holly, I am struggling with this series quite a bit.
I have always loved King’s writing, and he is a master at it. He is also a master at creating unique and interesting characters both the good characters and his menacing villains. He well thought out plots and twists. My main issue was the slowness of the book paired with sections of yelling at the rally’s and when the ‘villains’ do their thing.
Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for this book, perhaps reading it rather than listening to the audiobook might have been a better experience. Who knows? But this one didn’t blow me away. We can’t love them all and while I found enjoyment in this book. King thew a lot into this book – perhaps too much. It felt bogged down to me with periods of greatness shining through.
As I mentioned, I miss vintage Stephen King. I love when he scares me, creeps me out, has me looking over my shoulder and under my bed. I miss the sheer brilliance of his earlier work. Don’t get me wrong, he can still spin a yarn, but I want to be horrified by King. This felt more like a mystery and less horror.
We can’t love them all and that is the case here. Others are loving this book so please read their reviews as well.
