What in God’s green earth did I just read?????? The Graceview Patient is incredibly unique, dark, tense, mesmerizing, bleak, gothic, and dripping with unease. The blurb was not kidding when it said this book is claustrophobic. It takes place in a hospital where Margaret is being treated for a rare autoimmune condition. She is in Graceview Memorial voluntarily to take part of an experimental medical trial which she hopes will help her. So, what happens when all hope is lost???

As the treatment progresses, Margaret endures a lot of procedures and pain. She also encounters various hospital staff and other patients. At various times Margaret, along with this reader began to wonder if she hallucinating perhaps from the pain, or is there something not quite right about this hospital? Is there something sinister going on?

This book has an eerie feel to it. As I mentioned, its claustrophobic, dark, horrific and bleak. I had both the book and the audiobook version of The Graceview Patient. I found that the narrator of the audiobook spoke with an almost a monotone slow pace. I could feel the bleakness coming through and portrayed what the heavily medicated Margaret might sound like.

This book gets high marks for originality and for setting a mood. It made me uncomfortable and left me feeling unsettled. It provides that trapped feeling that I love in books. She is there voluntarily but can she really leave? One will need to read this book to find out!

Dark, creepy, claustrophobic, unsettling, and horrific!

Thank you to Dreamscape Media, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
