Raising a family is not always a Hallmark moment.
Blythe Connor did not have a nurturing or loving mother. Her mother did not have a loving mother. Blythe vows she will not be like her mother. She will be loving, hands on and nurturing mother to her daughter, Violet. She wants to bond with her but can’t help feeling that something is not quite right with her child. Is this feeling the result of sleep deprivation, is she making too much of things, is she imagining things as her husband, Fox claims? Is she experiencing post-partum depression?
When their son Sam is born, Blythe feels an instant connection to him. She has the relationship with him that she wanted with her daughter. But then she is devastated by a tragedy and everything in her life begins to fall apart.
What role does mental health play in your life? What happens when you can’t connect with your child? What happens when your child doesn’t connect with or appear to like you? What happens when you suspect something about your child? What happens when your spouse doesn’t support you? What happens if you are wrong? What happens if you are right? What happens if you can’t move on? What happens if the stress is too much?
I went back and forth about how I felt about this book while reading it. I enjoyed it, it made me uncomfortable, I felt for the characters, I disliked the characters, I wanted the truth, I wanted to cover my eyes, I enjoyed the creepy vibe, I didn’t like the creepy vibe…. You get the picture.
This one stayed with me, and I was thinking about it after reading the last page. There is so much to digest and think about with this book. This would make a great book club book as there is a lot to discuss in this book.
