I had such HIGH hopes for this book. The first half was so slow, but I hung in there hoping it would get better and it did for a while. I became invested and it became a 3-star read then it plummeted again. Unfortunately, this was not the book for me!

The premise sounded interesting: a curse that haunts a legendary lost film mixed with Nazi occultism and Mexican horror films. It sounded odd, yet very enticing. This was a strange one. I have to give the author props for originality on this one.

Friends since she stuck up for him during their childhood, Tristán and Montserrat both work in entertainment. She is a sound mixer, and he is a former soap actor and voice actor.

Tristán learns he is neighbors with cult horror director Abel Urueta, and he and Montserrat go to Ureta’s home and they are asked to help him film the final scene. Sounds easy enough, right? Nope!

Again, this was a very slow burn, and I am not a fan of slow burns. There is also a lot of explaining (and I mean a lot of explaining) and detail without a lot of action. With talk of magic, sorcerers and occultism, I was expecting more excitement and action.

I am an outlier for this book. I had such high hopes and at times did enjoy this book but for the most part it was too slow and not for me. Others are enjoying this book so please read their reviews as well.

I have enjoyed two of her other books, this just wasn’t the right fit for me. I am open to reading more of her books in the future.

Thank you to Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine, Del Rey and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
