After I read Murder at Haven’s Rock and thinking it was so well done, I decided to read the Rockton series where the main characters are first introduced. It was rewarding and exciting to read about Casey arriving in Rockton after following her friend, Diana, there. Rockton is a unique town where people go to live off the grid, to leave behind relationships, and to be free of the outside world. This means no internet, no mail, no cell phones, etc.
The town council must vote you in or out of the town and Casey is an attractive candidate as she is a homicide detective and the private self-containing town has had their first murder. She will be working with Sheriff Eric Dalton and Deputy Will Anders.
Casey is an interesting character. She is confident, strong, and determined. Yet she is also vulnerable and for some reason accepts the bad behavior and treatment of her friend. Casey is trying to catch a killer in this book all the while knowing that she herself, killed a man in college.
I love books set in cold unforgiving environments. I love the trapped feeling of having no way in or out — unless you go by foot and take a chance with the predators who live in the woods. This provided atmosphere and unease.
I found this book to be well written, chilling, well thought out, with a nice amount of tension, atmosphere, and dread. I also enjoyed the pacing, nothing felt dragged out or rushed. There is a nice blending of suspense, mystery, and romance.
I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narration.
Gripping, well written, and atmospheric!
