A romance with some vampires thrown in for good measure! Nena is the daughter of a rancher who as a child spent her days with Néstor exploring and having fun together. As they grow older, their bond grows closer and closer until one horrible night, Nena is attacked by something lurking in the dark. Something with sharp teeth and an unsatiable appetite. When Néstor carries Nena’s unresponsive body home he is told she is dead, and he runs away in his unbearable grief.

Nine years have passed and Nena and Néstor come face to face once again. Their shock is palpable as is their feelings. There is anger, pain, love, longing, and danger, so much danger as something is still lurking, still watching, and still menacing.

This book had a nice amount of tension, dread, danger, and shocking moments. This book is also atmospheric, and the setting is also a character in the book. Besides vampires, this book also touches on friendship, love, family, class, tradition, expectations, and history.

I enjoyed this book and rooted for the two main characters, I wanted more of the vampires and their backstory. Dare I say I wanted more gore, more blood, more guts? It’s true, I wanted to be scared but wasn’t. But this book did have me wondering who the true monsters were in this book.

*I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narration.
